A Map of Who’s Got the Best (And Worst) Internet Connections in America

In the digital age, access to high speed internet is fundamentally important. But some regions of the country are still left out in the cold. We took a look at where you can get the best–and not best–internet in the U.S.

Juliana Payson‘s insight:

America’s slow, expensive internet. Although it seems like I might be complaining – at speeds commonly around 7.2 Mbps, I can still remember times when our connectivity was as slow as 100 Bytes per second! However, the FCC recently imposed a challenge to all states to be able to provide 50Mbps ethernet by the year 2015. Looking at this map makes me wonder if that’s possible. Finally I have stronger hopes for Google’s Project Loon, bringing internet connection to more remote places.

The Internet map

Colors represent main country ownership of different parts of the internet. The size of each point is scaled according to the traffic it receives as determined by Alexa. The proximity of the objects to each other is determined by how much ‘switching’ occurs between those two websites. Referral sources as determined by Alexa. For example Youtube, Facebook and Google clearly dominate and also with proximity to each other near the center of the dot com or mainly US based internet space.
